whatever i did, i must have done it right.
this really friendly, talkative woman who had gotten her hair done just before me (at sin den, a salon that caters to the foreign population of tokyo), decided to stay to read some of the latest (woohoo english!) fashion magazines before heading home, walked by my chair, leaned in and said, "oh my gosh, you have beautiful eyes! have you ever modeled?"
(insert awkward stammer and self-conscious laugh by yours truly.)
"uh, thank you...and no, but wow, thank you." wow. talk about being totally flattered!
then later, i was telling my hairstylist that i had quit my job and was studying for a big japanese test, and the woman chipped in, "level one??" to which my hairdresser did a bunch of sugoi-ing and wow-ing. the woman said it was really hard, but didn't mention whether she had passed it or not.
turns out she works for a publishing company in japan (can almost safely assume she's got 1kyu then) i didn't let the chance go by to mention that i thought it'd be really cool to write a book about working and living on the top of mt fuji, with photos and text. she said it sounded cool so i told her when she gets an email from a random girl saying she met you at the hair dressers, it'll be me. she laughed and said "you'd be surprised how often it happens."
you can be certain that's one business card i won't be misplacing!
lessons of the day:
1. sometimes it's just about being in the right place at the right time.
2. i should do my eye makeup the same way i did it today everyday from now on.

Sounds like you MAY have met my old boss today...this is not neccessarily a good thing. Or someone that works for her organization.
I think your story would make a great one though!
It is always nice to receive compliments! Do we get to see the hair?
