i finished the patchwork part of my charm quilt!!!
now i have to decide what fabric to use for the border and backing. i pulled out what fabric i do have, and only two of them seem to be real options.
or
or
go shopping!
cherry blossom:
i feel like the quilt is already fairly girly and want something that isn't too gender specific* and worry that the cherry blossom fabric is. i do like that it's "japanesey" though and i think the colors look nice with the rest of the quilt. maybe i should just decide to let it be girly?
polka dots:
i like the dark color when next to the rest of the squares, but wonder if it'd be too dark for the whole back? the pattern would making quilting easier though, because i could just connect the dots diagonally (i'm thinking of just doing straight line quilting) to give the patchwork another dimension as well.
thoughts?
*though until they are old enough to voice an objection, my kids will wear ALL colors, thankyouverymuch.

i love them both but waver toward the cherry blossom. the colours work really well with the combination of squares. is your binding strip going to be that wide?
no question at all for me - I LOVE the dark blue polka dots. The large scale print and calming color gives the eye a place to rest after the print rainbow patchwork. Gosh. Looks great!!!
I love the dark one - but find the polka dots overwhelming. I also love the floral one - but it doesn't really make the quilt pop. I love what you've done so far - nice work! I dread getting to the backing part. I'm horribly indecisive.
I'm thinking that because it is a scrapdown that you should use what you have OR ARRANGE A SWAP WITH ME!! I (imagine really really really big print here) LOVE that cherry blossom fabric and would love to arrange a trade either way!! Pretty much every one of the fabrics you sent were my absolute favorites! This gave me the opportunity to say so... Honest, let's arrange a swap. I can shop here to get whatever you want.... including a foot for your sewing machine! Mine was only 10 dollars! Lets swap!
to be honest, neither one is knocking my socks off.
as for the quilt, i love how you've put mostly dark colors on the outer edges. i would suggest putting a lighter color for the border. and there are no rules against using two borders. so! i suggest the flower print as an inner border, no more than 1.5 inches wide and then the polka dot as an outer border, maybe 2.5 or 3 inches wide.
have you decided on a back? or is it between these two? i personally would buy a solid color for a boarder and use a print for binding (just make your own :D ) and also for me personally, i like to have a binding that's different from the backing.
beautiful quilt, am loving it!!
oops, thought i fixed that typo. not 'boarder', i mean 'border'! LOL
also, looking at it again, you have that dot as an edge piece so it might be just a bit funny looking with the border right next to it.

i'm planning on putting a border around the patchwork squares and then doing the binding. i'd like the border and binding to be different but haven't even thought about what fabric to use for the binding! aaah!
katy:
i also really like the dark color, but am starting to wonder about the dots. might just have to go to the store and look around...aaah, more decisions!
kayce:
i agree that the cherry blossom one doesn't make the rest of the quilt pop, which is why i really like the dark. maybe just something other than the dots...?

interestingly enough, i didn't have any scraps to begin with, so everything i sent for the scrapdown was bought! i only bought my sewing machine last year (i moved to japan 3 years ago, and things like bed, table and dresser came before sewing machine :P) i'm really glad to hear you liked all the fabrics - i love your pillow shams!! - and would definitely be up for some kind of swap! i'll send you an email! :)

oooh, i hadn't thought of a lighter color. i don't have a lot of fabric choices, so i'm thinking i will just have to go shopping! as for border/binding/backing combinations, i was thinking about using the same fabric for the border and the backing, but using a different fabric for the binding. i like the backing and binding to be different too! but, i'd also be into using a different fabric for each one. shopping it is! ;)
