japanese wedding = lots of yennies

i went a friend's wedding on saturday.

it was *absolutely* beautiful.

the weather was sunny with perfect blue skies,
the chapel/reception location was a castle,
(not really but might as well have been!)
the bride was stunning, the groom was smitten,
it even made me wedding daydream a bit until i heard
from another, recently married, friend of the bride
the price tag on a wedding like my friend's...

¥4,000,000 (!!!!)

(i'll give you a few moments to pick your jaw up off the table)

sadly, your eyes are indeed seeing 6 zeros.
with a little current-exchange-rate math,
that turns into over $51,000. yikes!

so yeah, the bbq in the backyard of my parents' house? eloping?
sounding better and better every minute.

you would think everyone was made out of money when it comes to weddings here.

I knew I couldn`t do it in Japan just because my family (who at that time involved a lot of little ones) couldn`t come here where DH`s family could go there (his sister was already in the US.

My mom gave me 3,000 for it. And I am happy to say that covered it all with a really nice lunch buffet for 50 people

If you are carefully its quite easy to have a nice wedding on a small budget, my sister had the same but since she had like 200 people the reception food was more on the line of rolled up ham and cheese and crackers.

I also made the cake which was a big help

They probably would have gotten about half that back in wedding money. Probably more than half. Down here even if you hardly know the person 20,000 yen is the very very least you could get away with giving and even then it would probably be considered a bit rude. Family and you are looking at 100,000 yen gift money.

Still a crazy amount. Did you get any nice pics with the bride?

No wonder gifts of (a lot!! of) money is the expected gift at a wedding! And no wonder so many of my Japanese friends have opted to skip a wedding ceremony!!
